Englands Determination to Reclaim the Ashes

England Cricket Ashes

The 2021 Ashes series starts in December with the preparation for both countries already well underway. England has lost their last two series (against India and New Zealand) and will need to improve in all areas ahead of their trip to Australia.

Who Could Star for England?

The thinking behind England’s squad selection could change many times over the next few months. The upcoming series against India will allow players to stake their claim for a place in the squad. It’s also worth keeping an eye on not only the form of England’s current players but also those in the County Championship. Jake Libby could be an outside bet for a call-up. The Worcestershire batsman started the domestic season in great form and could have captured the attention of England’s selectors.

Flashback to 2019

Despite only drawing the series, and ultimately not regaining the Ashes, there were still some great moments from an English perspective. Who could forget that Ben Stokes innings at Headingley? Or how about Jack Leach’s glasses?

Australia’s Steve Smith starred throughout that series and played a big part in his country’s retention of the urn. A tense afternoon at Old Trafford resulted in them being guaranteed at least to draw the series. All in all, it was a truly memorable summer with some memorable moments from many of the world’s greatest players. Only a few weeks before the 2019 Ashes, England won the World Cup and beat Australia on their way to glory. Despite this, the current cricket betting odds put Australia as strong favorites to win the series. So, it’s clear that it is all to play for and that it will be a thrilling watch this year.

The Last Time England Won a Series in Australia

The 2010/2011 Ashes was the last time England won a test match down under, never mind the series. That particular tour was the crowning glory of Andrew Strauss’s captaincy. It also saw players like Kevin Pietersen playing at the peak of their powers. Future captain Alastair Cook was the man of the series and also scored the most runs.

In that same series, James Anderson picked up the most wickets with an incredible 24. He is nearing retirement and if he is selected, will be looking to flourish once again. He has taken over 600 wickets now and his experience could still prove to be vital.

Since that incredible series, England has had two pretty disastrous tours of Australia. They lost 5-0 in 2013/2014 and 4-0 in 2017/2018. Can they improve this record and reclaim the iconic urn?

A Cricketer has Broken the Top 5 Most Followed Athletes on Instagram and Continues to Add Followers

cricketers on instagram

Athletes have found that they can make great use of online social media platforms to not only stay connected to their fans, but also grow their worth as a so-called influencer. While not all of the best athletes in the world have a public Instagram account that they update regularly, many of the biggest names are reaping the benefits of such a presence.

For several years, the ranks of the most popular athletes on Instagram have been dominated by soccer players and one celebrity basketball player. In just a couple of years, though, a megastar cricketer has broken through in style, and continues to grow their following, as do their compatriots. So, who is this social media sensation, and could they eventually close in on the big three?

India’s presence being felt on Instagram

India has rapidly become the second-largest internet-using nation in the world, with an ever-growing count of well over 650 million users across the subcontinent. As mobile connections continue to grow, that number will climb closer to the nation’s staggering population, 1.36 billion, as will the number of social media users. As you can see on India Today, there were already 210 million Indian Instagram users as of February 2021.

As such, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that many of these Indian Instagram users have flocked to the biggest star of the most popular sport in the country. Of course, he has several followers from outside of his home nation and is active enough to warrant a strong following, but it’s his native backing that’s surged the following of Virat Kohli. National team captain, master of all formats, and ICC Male Cricketer of the Decade, Kohli more than deserves such a colossal following.

Recently, Kohli broke into the top-20 of all Instagram accounts, with his growing 137 million followers swiftly closing in on the 138 million of Miley Cyrus. His biggest gain, however, came almost a year ago, though, when he muscled past one of American basketball’s biggest names, LeBron James, who remains in fifth among athletes with 91.6 million. Furthermore, in this report from Open Dorse, it’s been seen that other Indian cricketers are on the rise, namely MS Dhoni (34.1 million), Sachin Tendulkar (30 million), and Hardik Pandya (18.9 million).

Can Kohli topple the big three?

The greatest debate in world soccer for over a decade has a clear winner in the Instagram followers war. While the two already-legendary players are in line to win convincingly with their teams on the opening day of the season when you bet on football at Space Casino, Cristiano Ronaldo is the clear winner on Instagram. Once again, though, they tussle in the first and second spots.

Cristiano Ronaldo is not only the most-followed athlete on the platform but also the most-followed human account – only trumped by the official Instagram account. His 315.5 million followers dwarf that of Lionel Messi’s 233.6 million. That said, the Argentine megastar claimed one of his counterpart’s records, per ESPN, with the most-liked sports photo that grabbed 20 million likes, beating Ronaldo’s best of 19.8 million.

Standing between the two biggest names in the most popular sport in the world and Virat Kohli is Brazilian star Neymar Jr., who boasts a firm 155 million followers. Given the rate at which Kohli is accumulating followers, there’s a good chance that he’ll surpass the heir apparent to Messi and Ronaldo in a matter of years. However, amassing some 161 million followers, at least, would be a tall order, even for a star like Kohli.

Kohli’s superstardom is only becoming more apparent with his massive army of Instagram followers, and with more Indians joining the online community every day, he could well close in on the big three soccer stars soon.

How Cricket is Becoming More Mainstream

cricket

Cricket is one of the oldest of the still-existing sports and certainly boasts one of the most global reaches of them all. Clocking in just behind football, the game is played and followed from the UK to Australia, up to India, down to South Africa, and over to the Caribbean. Now, there are even more nations working their way into the ICC’s good books, qualifying for international competition across the formats.

Still, cricket has plenty of room to grow, especially below the international level, and it seems to be doing just that. Thanks to a combination of large sporting nations taking to the crease as well as some pop-culture revelations, cricket is picking up steam once again, particularly in its shorter forms.

Big stage entertainment and breaking new ground

Perhaps one of the most significant recent breakthroughs for the sport of cricket has been finding players to the west of the West Indies. As with football, the US has famously had a distinct aversion to cricket, but now, both of them are picking up speed in the colossal sports market. There’s said to be some 30 million cricket fans in the US, encouraged by people from India and the Caribbean coming over.

Certainly helping the sport is the quality of its showpiece events. The 2017 Women’s World Cup reached a nail-biting finish conclusion, with a record 180 million people plus watching around the world. Then, the 2019 Men’s Cricket World Cup set its own record, gaining an average live cumulative audience of 1.6 billion.

Cricket’s growing into pop culture

With more global interest than ever, people are seeking more ways to engage with the sport, and they’re finding it just about everywhere. In fact, as detailed by the Cricket Star Slots review, even non-cricket fans find it hard to resist the atmosphere of the stadium and its fans within the game. The festive atmosphere that now comes with short-form cricket has made it all the more accessibly exciting, lending it to mainstream pop culture.

In nations like India and Australia, the big-money short-form contests of the IPL and Big Bash have forged an even greater celebrity status of the stars of the show. Those that show explosive batting, bowling, and big personalities win over the supercharged crowds. This year, a new form of cricket billed as being even more accessible to the mainstream, The Hundred, will arrive and promises to be an unforgettable experience.

On top of this, many celebrities have been spotted at matches and openly talk about their love of the sport. The likes of Usain Bolt, Stephen Fry, Hugh Jackman, Elton John, Shahrukh Khan, Daniel Radcliffe, Mark Wahlberg, and Michael Palin are included in the famous cricket fan group. In fact, Coldplay bassist Guy Berryman hit the headlines by donating a kit to a struggling cricket side.

Now, with more interest than ever in cricket, figureheads are doing the right thing by leaning on the format proving to be the most accessible and immediately gratifying to fans. Test cricket still has its place and showcases the ultimate test that the sport can offer, but one-day and T20 cricket is undisputedly easy to grasp and get behind. Seeing batsmen hit for the big scores or have their wickets snap apart offer the highest points of the game, which come thicker and faster in short form.

Cricket’s already a huge global sport, but it’s certainly picking up speed again, thanks to it clearing new boundaries and becoming even more accessible.

T20 World Cup Moved to the Middle East This Fall

T20 World Cup

The ICC have moved the already delayed Men’s T20 World Cup from India to the Middle East. Originally scheduled for Australia last fall, the new host countries are Gulf states Oman and the United Arab Emirates.

In a way, it is only fitting that the UAE takes on the T20 international tournament as it starts just two days after the revised date for the IPL final takes place out there. The T20 World Cup begins on October 17 with the final taking place on November 14.

Cricket venues in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and Muscat in neighboring Oman will be used but hosting rights remain with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Despite the switch in location, the format of the tournament finals is expected to remain as planned.

That means a preliminary round robin group stage featuring eight nations. This pool will include the six teams that went through qualifying, which ironically includes Oman. Scotland, Ireland, Namibia, the Netherlands, and Papua New Guinea also booked their spots at the T20 World Cup finals through the 2019 qualifiers held in the UAE.

Joining them are the lowest-ranked of the top 10 T20 cricketing countries in the rankings from then; Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The top four from this group will then advance to the Super 12s stage. From those, the top four then have playoffs to determine who reaches the T20 World Cup final.

India Favorites In Spite of Switch

Despite the tournament moving locations once again, it’s all the usual suspects who are fancied to go out to the Middle East and win it. The current ICC Men’s T20 international rankings don’t quite reflect the market. England are top of those, yet it is nominal hosts India who are the 11/4 favorites in the cricket odds available with Betway as of July 2.

When you consider that the IPL is the premier T20 franchise competition, and players from all over the world come to compete in it, this explains why oddsmakers take the stance they do. Australia have their own limited overs league in the Big Bash too, which is also well subscribed in terms of overseas players.

These cricket-mad countries may have the T20 World Cup between them, especially as New Zealand’s own best exploits have recently culminated in them winning the inaugural World Test Championship against India. Top players do make seamless transitions between different forms of cricket, but limited overs and short formats are very much in vogue with The Hundred launching in England this summer.

Much of the game is also geared around T20 out in the West Indies thanks to the Caribbean Premier League. Although not as established as the Big Bash or IPL, this competition has certainly helped the Windies on the international stage. They come into this tournament as holders of the T20 World Cup, having beaten England by four wickets in the final five years ago with just two balls to spare.

Pakistan Could Be Ones to Watch

The one nation that may be overpriced for the tournament finals is Pakistan, and there are three reasons why they may outperform their double-figure odds. First, they sit fourth in the world for T20 right now, surprisingly above Australia. A blanket of just five rating points covers Pakistan, New Zealand, and the Aussies. So, who the best of the rest, behind the top two England and India, turns out to be is seemingly fluid at the moment.

What is not in doubt is that Pakistan have the most ranking points. This could be because they’ve played (30) and won the most matches in the period that their rating is based on. Second, of all the competing cricket countries playing at the T20 World Cup finals, Pakistan have the most experience of conditions in the Middle East.

For many years when it was felt holding cricket internationals in Pakistan wasn’t a good idea, they made the UAE their home. Senior players in their setup will still well remember that and can help younger names on the roster at the tournament. Finally, the Pakistan Super League is starting to take off.

While it is always going to be in the shadow of neighboring India’s IPL, which is the original T20 franchise competition, there is growing international interest in playing for a PSL team. These are based in big cities within Pakistan like Karachi and Lahore. The PSL is also smaller in scope than the IPL with just six competing franchises, which makes the event shorter and less of a commitment for overseas players.

Pakistan’s current T20 international ranking may reflect the progress six years of the PSL has helped their own domestic cricketers make in limited overs action. The T20 World Cup finals should provide more excitement when the tournament rocks the Middle East this fall.
